Joint Supplements
The equine joint supplement market is MASSIVE, minimally regulated, and full of products that sound impressive. Labels lean heavily on buzzwords, not bioavailability.
**Always remember that horses are individuals and results can be seen but may vary widely.
Most ingredients fall into two categories:
1. Evidence-backed (with limitations)
• Glucosamine & Chondroitin — Mixed research; may support cartilage metabolism but not a cure-all.
• Hyaluronic Acid (HA) — Oral forms show variable absorption; injectable HA is far more reliable.
• MSM — Anti-inflammatory properties, but effects are modest.
2. “Promising but inconsistent”
• Collagen — Early data is interesting, but equine-specific research is limited.
• Omega-3s (DHA/EPA) — Helpful for systemic inflammation, not joint-specific repair.
What Joint Supplements Cannot Do:
• They cannot reverse arthritis.
• They cannot replace proper workload management.
• They cannot fix poor farriery, saddle fit, or conditioning.
• They cannot substitute for veterinary diagnostics.
Where Joint Supplements Do Fit:
• A horse has mild stiffness or early-stage joint changes.
• You’re supporting a high-performance workload.
• You’re targeting inflammation reduction alongside a vet-guided plan.
• You’re trying to maintain comfort in a senior horse with known degenerative changes.
The MOST Important Factor: Bioavailability
A supplement is only as good as what the horse can absorb-and that’s hard to measure.
Look for:
• Transparent ingredient forms (e.g., glucosamine sulfate vs. “proprietary blend”).
• Meaningful dosages.-call me!
• Third-party testing for purity and label accuracy.
When It’s Time for Veterinary Intervention:
• Persistent lameness
• Heat, swelling, or acute changes
• Declining performance despite supplementation
…it’s time for diagnostics!
The Bottom Line:
Joint supplements can support comfort and mobility — but only when used strategically, with realistic expectations, and as part of a broader management plan. They’re tools-to be used alongside a balanced diet. This is why you need to work with me!
