All about ‘Biotics
PREBIOTICS • PROBIOTICS • POSTBIOTICS
Three “biotics,” three different jobs - and your horse’s gut knows the difference.
If you’ve ever stared at a gut supplement label and wondered why everything sounds the same… you’re not alone. Most owners add a scoop of a “biotic” without really knowing what intended organ the powder or pellet is meant to support. Gut health marketing loves to blur lines and they are sooo good at it! Your horse’s hindgut doesn’t respond to flashy marketing - it runs on biology. Let me help you understand the importance of these supplements.
Here’s what you need to know before we take a deep dive in the coming weeks!
Prebiotics: the food.
These are fermentable fibers that feed the beneficial microbes already living in the hindgut. Think of them as the groceries for the microbial workforce.
Probiotics: the microbes.
Live organisms (usually specific strains of bacteria or yeast) intended to support or stabilize the gut environment. Not all strains survive the stomach. Not all strains do the same thing. Strain matters.
Postbiotics: the metabolites.
These aren’t bugs or fibers — they’re the beneficial compounds microbes produce. Short chain fatty acids, enzymes, peptides… the “end products” that actually influence gut health, immunity, and inflammation.
Three categories. Three mechanisms. Three very different evidence profiles.
Most supplements toss them together like a trail mix mystery bag. We’re not doing that here.
Over the next three Fridays, we’ll break down each one:
-what it actually is
-what it actually does
-when it’s useful and when it’s just expensive fluff
Today is your 'half-scoop'. Next week, we start with prebiotics- the fuel that keeps the hindgut running.
